CHENNAI: In the biggest upset of the tournament so far qualifier Aljaz Bedene of Slovakia defeated second seed and World No 14 Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets.

Playing a qualifier is always a tricky proposition as he is well versed with conditions and his body too is well tuned for the course. It was a rude shock for Lopez playing his first match as he failed to find his rhythm.

Lopez was ranting and shouting at himself for a major part of the game as he was not able to get into rhythm.

Bedene kept it simple as he knew that if he could break the Spaniard once and then hold on to his serve he stood a chance to enter the quarterfinals. That’s what happened in the first set when Lopez was broken by Bedene in the third game.

In the second Bedene got a solid opening when he broke Lopez in the very first game. There after Lopez lost steam and struggled to hold his remaining serves. The main problem was his inconsistent backhand.

Bedene gave a good account of Magista Onda TF himself, with brilliant serves, matched by confident returns, not to forget the volleys and lobs.

Third seed Roberto Bautista Agut, ranked No 15 in the world, lived up to his reputation of smooth operator with a clinical 6-3, 6-2 win over Peter Gojowczyk of Germany, placed 79th in the world, in a second round.

Agut broke Gojowczyk in the second game and then held on to his serve to lead 3-0. The German upped the tempo, served better and improved his court mobility to hold on to his serve to make the score 1-3.

This gave him confidence and he broke Agut in the next game. It is here that Agut upped the tempo, knowing fully well that his opponent had sniffed blood. His aggression paid dividends as he broke Gojowczyk again to take a 4-2 lead and did not look back.

Paes in Semis

Top seeds Leander Paes and Raven Klaasen of South Africa lived up to their billing and entered the semifinals of the men’s doubles event with a hard-fought win over Mahesh Bhupathi and Saketh Myneni.

The Paes-Klaasen combination came back from a set down to beat Bhupathi and Myneni 1-6, 6-1, 10-7.
