Magista Obra FG black Allen’s strengths — besides an exceptionally strong arm — is “maturity.”
Allen, wearing a No. 10 jersey, likely will trot out to raucous cheers on Saturday morning, with the idea he’s the person pegged to try and shake the 5-3 Aggies from their midseason doldrums after a 5-0 start. A&M, with Hill faltering much like the rest of his teammates, has dropped its last three contests to SEC West powers Mississippi State, Mississippi and Alabama by a combined 91 points.
Incredibly, considering he’s been demoted after starting the first eight games, Hill ranks in the nation’s top eight in six quarterback categories, including fifth in completions (214) and sixth in total offense (350.6 yards per game). But A&M failed to reach the end zone two weeks ago at Alabama in the school’s second worst loss in program history (59-0), and Sumlin believed a change was necessary.
Earlier in the week, A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital spoke of Allen’s commitment to becoming a top-notch quarterback.
“He shows up early, gets extra work in and he’s showing that he’s really trying to Adizero 11Pro FG go and get this job,” Spavital said.
Allen is one of A&M’s top-rated recruits of all time, as he was Rivals.com’s No. 1 quarterback prospect in the class of 2014. Allen, who’s 6-3 and 205 pounds, threw for more than 8,000 yards at Desert Mountain High in Scottsdale, Ariz., over three years as a starter.
He tabbed the Aggies’ and Sumlin’s typically high-octane system — although it’s run out of gas of late — over the likes of Alabama, UCLA and Notre Dame, and he enrolled at A&M last January with the idea of taking part in spring drills and fighting for the starting gig.
Allen hasn’t exactly set football fields aflame in four appearances so far this season. He’s completed 23 of 38 passes for 264 yards, and he has nearly as many interceptions (two) as touchdowns (three).
But he’s only entered games with their outcomes — both good and bad for Mercurial Vapor X FG Black the Aggies — no longer in question, so Saturday’s experience will be invaluable both for him and his coaches’ evaluations of his performance in meaningful minutes.
When Sumlin named Hill the starter in August following a tight contest to replace 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, a resolute Allen posted on his Twitter page, “Don’t count me out yet.”
Nine games into the season, he’ll earn the chance to back up his bravado, against a Warhawks squad that allows its secondary to play plenty of man-to-man defense while the front seven habitually blitzes the quarterback. A&M third-stringer Conner McQueen said in the preseason that one of Magista Obra FG black Allen’s strengths — besides an exceptionally strong arm — is “maturity.”
“He came in here at 17 years old — he couldn’t even buy a lottery ticket — and is more professional about the quarterback position than anyone I’ve ever met,” said McQueen, who served as an understudy to Manziel and then-backup Matt Joeckel in 2012 and Hypervenom Phelon Neymar ’13.
Meanwhile, there are no living members of the 1939 national champions, and receiver Malcome Kennedy said the current team is thrilled to wear the throwback uniforms in their honor. A&M, in its third season competing in the Southeastern Conference, hasn’t won so much as a conference title since 1998, as a Big 12 member.
“To win a national championship – that’s the zenith of football,” Kennedy said. “Wearing these jerseys hopefully will bring some emotions to the guys.”
