Ocean has shown an ability to play close with good teams this year, but the Spartans have struggled to pull out wins.

That changed on Friday night when the Spartans went on the road to defeat Red Bank Regional, 14-6, behind a defense that suffocated the Bucs’ running game and forced two crucial turnovers.

After junior Sadiq Palmer opened the game with a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, the Spartans defense closed the door on the Bucs’ scoring for the night.

Junior TJ Saldutto highlighted the Spartans’ defensive effort, with a fumble return for a touchdown and a key sack in the fourth quarter. In the first quarter, Palmer stripped the ball running back Alim Godsey and sprinted 46 yards for a touchdown that would give Ocean a 7-6 lead.

“That’s huge, because the game opened with a kickoff return, and that sort of takes the life out of you,” said head coach Don Klein. “You’re starting the game already down a touchdown, so that play from Saldutto sort of evens it out.”

The Spartans limited the Bucs to just 35 yards on 26 carries. In the second half, the Bucs found some success through the air, but the Spartans came up with five sacks in key spots as well as an interception from senior Eric Rant to keep Red Bank out of the end zone.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Bucs gained some momentum when quarterback Jack Navitsky completed 3rd-and-18 with a 21-yard completion to Palmer. Navitsky would move the Bucs to the Spartans 19-yard line, but Rant ended the Bucs’ drive with an interception along the right side line.

The Bucs again reached Spartan territory on their Cheap Lebron James 10 Shoes following possession, but Saldutti, senior Frank Henry and senior Frank Demeter each came through with sacks that forced Red Bank back to a 4th-and-32 and an eventual turnover on downs.

UP NEXT: Red Bank will hope to get back to .500 at the road against Holmdel on Friday night, while Ocean will try its luck again No. 1 Red Bank Catholic on Friday night.
