The electric bicycle in Spain is undergoing a revolution with the arrival of new models, as it is a technology that allows a large number of people to use the ecological means of transport, now with less effort.

The electric bicycle increases sales

Like any revolution, this one also has a negative part, since the electric bicycle only accumulates 6.5% of market sales with some 70,000 units sold during the past year.

The traditional mountain bike has decreased its sales compared to last year by 7%, and the racing bicycle has decreased by 9%.

In addition to the sale of electric bicycles, there are other factors that explain why demand is not growing at the same level as in recent years. With higher disposable income and an increase in private consumption, bicycles and cycling have once again become one of the hobbies of Spanish buyers.

We must bear in mind that this sector comes from leaving behind some very good years, for example, in 2017 sold more than 1,116 million bicycles in Spain.
In addition, in recent decades, public administrations have been encouraging the use of bicycles to promote sustainable mobility, especially in large cities.
On the other hand, the contrasts faced by traditional commerce come through:

– A great competition that damages the profit margins, since a war of prices and discounts is being waged in search of survival and in some businesses it has ended in closure. Customers expect a discount of 10 to 15 percent.

On the other hand, department stores and multisport shops do not worry too much the traditional trade, as it takes 8 out of every 10 euros spent on the purchase of a bicycle.

More and more bicycles

The bicycle sector employs more than 8,000 people and the majority of companies are in the Basque Country and Catalonia, with a production of some 350,000 bicycles a year, although production is very concentrated.

There is a doubt as to whether such a concentrated sector will be able to resist the shift in demand towards electric bicycles.

On the one hand, the increase in bicycle prices is due to the technical and technological improvements such as accelerometers, tyres and even mobile applications. Although there is more potential is urban mobility, where the sector calls for greater public aid.

Private cycling has room in society, and this is where public administrations have a lot of work to do. There is the challenge of getting people out of their cars and engines and onto a bicycle.
